Angels Pitcher and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani has been on fire as of late. Ohtani’s homer today against the Tigers gives him 23 which is tied with Vladimir Guerrero for the most in the MLB. Sunday’s homer was his 70th career MLB HR which goes nicely along with the 100+ strikeouts he’s gotten as a pitcher. Only 3 other players in the history of the MLB have captured the 70+ career HR mark and 100+ career strikeout mark. These players are…
Rick Ankiel–76 HR, 269 K
Johnny Lindell–72 HR, 146 K
Babe Ruth–714 HR, 501 K
I’d say this is pretty elite company to be in (especially Babe Ruth). Ohtani is now batting .273 in 270 plate appearances and he has a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts with 73 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. What a talent Ohtani is becoming. It’s a shame that he plays for the Angels. If things stay the same, he could end up having a partially wasted career similar to Mike Trout.
